John Briggs is a partner in the projects practice.

​John leads our Brisbane Environment and Development Team and has been a partner with Ashurst for 18 years. He advises major corporations and governments on all aspects of environmental and planning law, particularly on the design of effective approval strategies for major projects. Over the past 5 years, John has advised on many complex environmental and related approvals processes for major projects across Australia.

John has advised many clients in energy and resources disputes opposing challenges to government approvals of clients' projects at all levels of State and Federal Courts in Australia.

He has a thorough understanding of administrative and public law concepts as they apply in environmental law. John also advises in environmental compliance matters (including assisting clients involved in regulatory investigations and defending prosecutions) and the management of major incidents and site contamination issues. He also specialises in the regulatory aspects of carbon and climate law and advises on environmental and planning law issues in real estate investments and real estate developments.

He is a member of the Queensland Resources Council's environment committee and the Queensland Exploration Council.
