Chief Legal and Sustainability Officer & Corporate Secretary at ATB Financial

As the Chief Legal and Sustainability Officer & Corporate Secretary, Stuart is the ‘sense-maker in chief’ for ATB Financial, understanding, translating and predicting the impacts in the external sustainability environment. He leads the Greater Good strategy including the social impact partnerships. He is responsible for procurement practices and activities. Stuart directs the legal affairs of ATB and its subsidiaries to ensure their rights, activities and interests are legally protected. He also supports the work of the board of directors and provides thought leadership to improve the performance of ATB’s business through good governance. He is a board member of ATB’s Wealth subsidiaries and ATB’s Capital Markets subsidiary.

Stuart joined ATB in 1997 and has progressively taken on new challenges and accountabilities through various roles within the organization. He represented ATB on the Pan Canadian Investors Committee for Third Party Structured ABCP during the financial crisis of 2007/08.

Stuart is known for his intense curiosity and his passion for developing others which he says is fostered by the culture and environment at ATB. He is grateful to work for an organization that has clear values that he shares. He is strategic, creative, and pragmatic in his approach to problem solving. He credits his work ethic - to seek integrity - to his father and to his deeply ingrained Alberta roots. And, if you can’t find him at work, you’ll find him with his family, or out touring on his motorcycle.

Stuart received his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Calgary and Bachelor of Laws from the University of Alberta. His ICD.D designation is from the Institute of Corporate Directors and is qualified by the Canadian Securities Institute to act as a Partner, Director and Officer. In 2014 Stuart was appointed Queen’s Counsel in the Province of Alberta, and in 2019 he was recognized as the Governance Professional of the Year by the Governance Professionals of Canada.
