Atelier in.vitro (AIV) is an architecture practice founded by Joana Leandro Vasconcelos in 2007, dedicated to architecture, heritage conservation and new-build design.

Its work is grounded in a contextual and experimental approach, where each project, whether the transformation of existing structures or the design of new buildings, emerges from a rigorous reading of site conditions, spatial constraints and programme requirements. Rather than imposing a fixed formal language, the studio develops singular architectural responses shaped by the relationship between memory, material and contemporary use.

Working across both built heritage and new construction, the practice transforms existing structures into contemporary inhabitable spaces while also designing new buildings that respond critically and precisely to their context. In both domains, projects combine technical rigour, construction intelligence and reflection on the cultural and urban environment in which they operate.

Each project is developed by multidisciplinary teams assembled specifically for its context, enabling in-depth investigation and architectural solutions tailored to the programmatic, economic and cultural needs of each client.

The studio’s work has been recognised through national architecture and urban rehabilitation awards, as well as through its active participation in academic and institutional initiatives related to urban transformation and the evolution of the built environment.

Architecture is understood as a process of mediation between time and space - a critical practice that transforms built memory and contemporary needs into meaningful spatial experience.
