Joshua Cooper

Joshua Cooper has a diverse and extensive work experience. Joshua has been a Professor at the University of South Carolina since December 2016, teaching subjects such as discrete mathematics, machine learning, and multilinear algebra. Their research interests include spectral hypergraph theory, graph pressing sequences, and binary matrix algebra, among others. Joshua also applies machine learning to problems in cell biology and digital signal processing.

Prior to their current role, Cooper held the position of Chief Scientist at AtomBeam starting from February 2018. Joshua was responsible for leading scientific research and innovation.

Cooper has been a Member of the Interdisciplinary Mathematics Institute at USC from September 2006 to May 2018. During this period, they were involved in interdisciplinary research projects.

From August 2012 to August 2017, Cooper served as the Chief Data Scientist at BehaviorMatrix, where they focused on social media market research and analytics. Joshua utilized machine learning and computational linguistics to analyze emotional signals in natural language, particularly in relation to influencers and implicit expressions of social capital.

Cooper has also held academic positions at various universities. Joshua was an Associate Professor at the University of South Carolina - Columbia from August 2010 to December 2016. Prior to that, they were a Palmetto Assistant Professor at the same university from June 2006 to August 2010. Cooper also worked as a Senior Scientist at ETH-Zurich from September 2005 to March 2006 and as an NSF Post-doctoral Researcher at New York University from September 2003 to July 2005.

Additionally, Cooper has industry experience. Joshua worked as a Consultant at Microsoft from September 2003 to December 2003, where they provided expertise in their field. Joshua also served as a Research Associate at the University of Washington from September 2003 to December 2003.

Early in their career, Cooper gained research and teaching experience at the University of California. Joshua worked as a Research Assistant from June 2003 to September 2003, as a Teaching Assistant from September 1999 to June 2003, and as a Research Assistant during the summers of 2002 and 2001.

Joshua Cooper earned a HS Diploma in an unspecified field of study from the Massachusetts Academy of Mathematics and Science from 1990 to 1995. Joshua then pursued a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Mathematics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, which they completed between 1995 and 1999. Following that, Joshua went on to attain a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in Mathematics and Computer Science from the University of California, San Diego, which they obtained from 1999 to 2003.
