Ashwin Carvalho

Ashwin Carvalho is a seasoned software engineer specializing in motion planning and controls, currently employed at Aurora since July 2019. Prior to this role, Ashwin served as a research engineer in the Special Projects Group at Apple from January 2017 to June 2019, focusing on motion planning for autonomous systems. Ashwin's academic background includes a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, where research in the Model Predictive Control Laboratory was conducted under the guidance of Prof. Francesco Borrelli. Research expertise encompasses real-time optimization-based planning strategies and active stability control on low-friction surfaces, complemented by practical experience in algorithm development, implementation, and testing on autonomous vehicles. Earlier roles include teaching assistant at the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay and vehicle dynamics engineer with IIT Bombay Racing, as well as a research intern at the University of Waterloo.
