Ryan Shirey

Ryan Shirey has a diverse work experience in the field of scientific research and teaching. Ryan is currently working as a Scientist at Avidity Biosciences, Inc. since 2022. Prior to this, they served as an Adjunct Chemistry Instructor and Chemistry Instructor at Clovis Community College from 2021 to 2022.

Ryan's professional journey started in 2016 at The Scripps Research Institute, where they worked as a PhD Candidate under the supervision of Dr. Kim D. Janda until 2021. During this time, they also held various roles as a Teaching Assistant for courses such as Chemical Biology, Drug Discovery and Development, and Cancer Biology.

Before joining The Scripps Research Institute, Ryan gained research experience as an Undergraduate Research Assistant at San Diego State University. Ryan'swork focused on studying the effects of pendent bases on homogeneous ruthenium water oxidation catalysis. Ryan conducted experiments and performed mechanistic studies to explore catalyst degradation pathways. This role lasted from 2013 to 2016.

In addition to research, Ryan was involved in educational programs. Ryan served as an Assistant Workshop Coordinator for the Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA) program at San Diego State University from 2014 to 2016. In this role, they managed and mentored workshop leaders and tutors in subjects like Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics. Ryan also worked as a Chemistry Workshop Instructor, creating lesson plans and teaching supplementary general chemistry workshops.

Furthermore, Ryan participated in the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) at Scripps Research in 2015. Ryan collaborated with Dr. Daniel Globisch in Dr. Kim Janda's lab during this research fellowship.

Ryan Shirey obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from San Diego State University from 2012 to 2016. Subsequently, from 2016 to 2021, they pursued a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Chemical Biology at Scripps Research. In addition to their academic qualifications, Ryan Shirey obtained a certification titled "From the Lab to Leadership" from The Leadership Edge in November 2022.
