Wei Gao

Dr. Wei Gao joined AXT in May 2019 as Chief Technical Officer. He is an experienced technology professional and executive officer. He has broad knowledge and experience in the III-V photonics industry, focusing on R&D, product development and manufacturing. Prior to AXT he was Vice President of High Power Lasers at InPhenix, Inc. In 2000, Dr. Gao founded Axcel Photonics with $10M in venture capital funding and served as Axcel’s President and CEO, as well as its CTO. He oversaw the construction of the cleanroom and the acquisition of all necessary equipment, including the MOCVD reactor and the fabrication lines for both GaAs and InP products. Under his leadership, Axcel developed a unique technology to produce world-class, high-power diode lasers. In 2010, Axcel was successfully acquired. Previously to Axcel, Dr. Gao held senior-level positions as Vice President of Raydex Technology, Vice President of Precision Digital Corporation, Application Engineer at Nortel Networks in the Optoelectronics Division and Senior Engineer at Lasertron.

Dr. Gao is a former faculty member of Beijing University in the Physics Department. He earned his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering in 1995 from University of Delaware, Newark, DE.
