Batlak AI Lab is a medical AI research lab based in Lagos, Nigeria, and the research arm of Batlak Medical Limited. We build clinically grounded datasets, benchmarks, and evaluation frameworks for medical AI, starting with medical imaging and chest radiology.

Medical AI systems are trained predominantly on data collected outside Africa, yet healthcare environments, disease patterns, imaging equipment, and patient populations can differ significantly across regions. We believe trustworthy healthcare AI requires locally relevant data, rigorous evaluation, and close collaboration with clinicians.

Our work focuses on developing the research infrastructure needed to support medical AI in Africa, including dataset creation, benchmark development, clinical validation, and AI evaluation.

Our flagship project, FMCEB-CXR, is a structured chest X-ray benchmark built from 5,517 chest radiography studies at a Nigerian tertiary hospital, combining X-ray images, radiology reports, and clinically validated pathology labels generated through a hybrid NLP-assisted annotation workflow and validated by consultant radiologists.

We welcome collaboration from researchers, clinicians, students, healthcare institutions, and organizations committed to advancing responsible and locally grounded healthcare AI across Africa
