En 1971, le CBIP a été constitué en asbl, dont l'objectif consiste à "assurer la formation continue ainsi que la mise à jour des connaissances dans le domaine de la pharmacothérapie des médecins, des pharmaciens et dentistes". La pharmacothérapie concerne le (bon) usage des médicaments dans la pratique clinique. Le CBIP fut agréé officiellement par arrêté royal le 28 février 1974. Depuis 1998, des informations sont également diffusées aux médecins vétérinaires.
