Rob OBrien

Director Regulatory Initiatives at BC Financial Services Authority

Rob OBrien has a diverse work experience spanning several roles and organizations.

Starting in 2007, they worked for the BC Provincial Government in various positions including Treasury Board Staff at the Ministry of Finance and Manager of International Business Development in Japan. In these roles, they provided strategic advice and support in areas such as finance, trade, and economic development.

In 2012, they became the Export Development Manager for the Aerospace, Marine, and Defense industries and later moved on to become the Aerospace Manager in the Economic Initiatives Branch. Here, they focused on developing strategies and promoting initiatives to advance industry competitiveness and economic growth in British Columbia.

In 2015, they transitioned to the role of Director of International Business Development, leading a team responsible for promoting trade and investment opportunities in key target markets and technology sectors.

In 2018, Rob joined BC Financial Services Authority (BCFSA) as the Managing Director of Policy. In this position, they led a team responsible for developing policies and guidelines for financial institutions to manage risk. Rob was involved in significant initiatives such as the Regulatory Roadmap and changes to the fee structure.

Throughout their career, Rob has demonstrated expertise in policy development, international business development, and industry promotion.

Rob O'Brien obtained their Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and Economics from Wilfrid Laurier University between 1993 and 1998. Rob later pursued a Master of Public Policy degree at Simon Fraser University from 2005 to 2007.
