Flight Controls Software Lead at Bell Flight

Steve Feenstra has a diverse work experience in the field of software engineering. Steve started their career at Smiths Aerospace in 1998 as a Software Technical Assistant. Steve then worked as a Software Engineer at Smiths Aerospace from 2000 to 2007, where they achieved the position of department expert for vibration acquisition card software and recommended the purchase of the CodeSonar static analysis tool for the company.

After that, they joined GE Aviation as a Software Technical Lead Engineer, where they led a multinational team in creating the airborne software application for a rotorcraft Health and Usage Monitoring System (HUMS). Steve also managed the entire software development lifecycle and effectively mitigated project risks.

In 2009, Steve joined Unitron as a Software Engineer and adapted software for a Vacuum Florescent Display (VFD) control board. Steve implemented new capabilities and improved the key-press response of the device.

In 2012, Steve worked at Belcan Engineering as a Software Engineer, where they wrote test equipment software and performed software task estimations.

Currently, they are employed at Bell Flight, where they have held various positions. As a Senior Software Development Engineer, Team Lead, they developed low-level software requirements for the Bell 525 Relentless flight control system and supported FAA Stage of Involvement (SOI) Audits. Later, they became a Principal Flight Controls Software Engineer, where they converted a crucial software test evaluation tool from Visual Basic to Python.

In their most recent role as the Flight Controls Software Lead at Bell Flight, Steve led a team of engineers, improved the reliability of high-level tests, and successfully closed out software change requests and problem reports. Steve also played a key role in conducting Problem Report Review Board (PRRB) meetings.

Steve Feenstra earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Grand Valley State University. Steve also completed a minor in Computer Engineering. Steve has an additional certification in NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering from the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying.
