Mark Upston has a diverse work experience in engineering and management positions. Mark started their career in 1984 as a Senior Mechanical Engineer at Murray-North Ltd. After that, they worked as a Consultant Engineer at the Electricity Corporation of NZ from 1986 to 1987. Mark then held the role of Resident Mechanical Engineer at Dar AlRiyadh in 1989. From 1990 to 1991, they worked as a Mechanical Engineer at Zisman Bowyer and Partners, London. Mark then became a Consulting Piping Engineer at Doosan Babcock from 1991 to 1994. In 1994, they worked as a Consulting Engineer at Fluor for a brief period. Mark then joined Solv-Ex Corporation (USA) as a Lead Project Engineer in 1997. From 1998 to 2003, they worked as a Technical Support Analyst at Rebis Inc. Since 2004, they have been associated with Bentley Systems, starting as a Senior Product Manager and later taking on roles as a Senior Director Structural Solutions and as a current position of Senior Director Engineering Simulation.

Mark Upston attended the University of Canterbury from 1978 to 1980, where they obtained a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering (Hons) degree in Mechanical Engineering. Mark later obtained certifications as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) from The Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) in 1997, and as a Professional Engineer (CMENGNZ) from Engineering New Zealand in 1987.
