Elton Cairns

Elton Cairns is a highly experienced consultant and academic with a focus on batteries, fuel cells, and electrochemical systems. Since January 1980, Elton has operated Elton J. Cairns Consulting while also serving as a Professor of the Graduate School at the University of California, Berkeley, where research encompasses advanced batteries and fuel cells. Concurrently, Elton holds the position of Faculty Senior Scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, concentrating on advanced battery and fuel cell technologies. Elton’s professional history includes significant roles such as Assistant Department Head at General Motors Research Laboratories, where work involved R&D on energy storage for electric vehicles, and Section Head at Argonne National Laboratory, focusing on high-temperature battery research. Elton has been a member of The Electrochemical Society since 1960, holding leadership roles such as President and Vice President. Elton earned a PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, and a BS in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering from Michigan Technological University.
