Gary Karpen is a Professor in the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology at UC Berkeley, where they have been teaching since 2018. Previously, they held the positions of Director and Senior Scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory from 2011 to 2016. Gary also served as a Professor at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies from 1991 to 2003 and was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Carnegie Institute between 1987 and 1991. They received their PhD in Genetics from the University of Washington, where they were also a Graduate Student and Research Technician earlier in their career.
