Jim Ciston

Deputy Director, Molecular Foundry

Jim Ciston serves as the Deputy Director of the Molecular Foundry at Berkeley Lab since April 2011, where responsibilities include developing and implementing strategies to support the organization's mission and guiding scientific initiatives alongside the leadership team. Ciston has an extensive background in materials science, specializing in advanced electron microscopy techniques, with significant research focused on the structural role of surfaces and interfaces in materials. Previous roles include Research Associate at Brookhaven National Laboratory, where work involved in-situ studies of catalytic materials, and Research Assistant at Northwestern University and Oxford University, where notable contributions included 3-D diffraction refinement and development of imaging methods for bonding electrons. Ciston holds a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from Northwestern University, along with dual Bachelor of Science degrees in Aerospace Engineering and Metallurgical and Materials Engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology.
