Margaret Dick

Chief of Staff at Berkeley Lab

Margaret Dick is currently the Chief of Staff at Berkeley Lab. Margaret has previous experience working as an Assistant Professor, Executive Director, and Special Assistant to the Chief of Staff & Leadership Communications Advisor.

Dick has a long history of working in environmentalism and research methods. In 2013, they were recruited to be the Executive Director for the Environmental Non-Profit "Avoided Deforestation Partners". In this role, they oversaw public relations, program evaluation, digital outreach and NGO partnerships for the company. In 2014, they were also responsible for communication strategy and outreach for the Showtime docu-series "Years of Living Dangerously". This series was executive produced by James Cameron, Jerry Weintraub, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Emmy-award winning 60 Minutes producers Joel Bach, David Gelber and Solly Granatstein.

Dick's experience as an Assistant Professor at Saint Mary's College of California has also given their a strong foundation in communication theory, public relations and advertising, management communication, and writing. During their time at the college, they also played a key role in building a campus-wide deliberative democracy process. Additionally, Dick developed campus-wide green initiatives and produced events showcasing student-led efforts.

Margaret Dick has a Master's degree in Communication and Rhetoric from Purdue University, and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Communication and Rhetoric from Purdue University. Margaret also has a Bachelor's degree in Rhetoric from the University of California, Berkeley. In addition, they have certification from LinkedIn in Having Difficult Conversations (2013) and Inclusive Leadership, as well as certification from Ken Blanchard on Servant Leadership.

They work with John German - Chief Communications Officer, John Elliott - Chief Sustainability Officer, and Todd Pray - Interim Chief Technology Transfer Officer. Margaret Dick reports to Michael Witherell, Director.
