Thomas Eng is a highly experienced biologist and research scientist with a strong background in systems biology and molecular biology. Currently serving as Deputy Director of Host Engineering at the Joint BioEnergy Institute since October 2021, and as Affiliate Faculty at the University of Hawaii at Hilo since September 2023, Thomas also holds multiple roles at Berkeley Lab, including Biologist Research Scientist and Bioinformaticist Project Scientist. Previous positions include Postdoctoral Fellow at the Joint Bioenergy Institute, where Thomas focused on membrane protein activity in Escherichia coli, and Junior Specialist/Staff Research Associate at UC Berkeley, where Thomas was also a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow. Early career experience includes a Technical Assistant role at the Whitehead Institute/MIT, studying DNA replication in Drosophila melanogaster. Educational qualifications include a BS in Biology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a PhD in Molecular and Cell Biology from the University of California, Berkeley.
