Bihua (笔画) is an online tool for studying the Chinese language. For a long time, students and teachers of the Chinese language in Portuguese-speaking countries have lamented the lack of online study materials for Chinese language translated into Portuguese. Bihua was conceptualized in Brazil by developer Vitor Butkus, who is also a certified Mandarin student at HSK4 level, and Chinese translator 吴量 (Wu Liang). In Bihua, it is possible to practice writing Chinese characters, following an animation that guides the sketch of each stroke, one by one. Additionally, the webapp allows for the consultation of the meanings of each character or word in Portuguese or English. When consulting any word or character, the student also discovers the HSK level to which the vocabulary belongs - Bihua provides information regarding both the old HSK (version 2.0) and the new HSK (version 3.0). The student can also listen to the audio of the word they are practicing in standard Mandarin and save their drawings in PNG format to show to their teacher and classmates. Bihua was developed by programmer Vitor Butkus, in collaboration with Chinese translator 吴量 (Wu Liang). Vitor and Wu Liang live many miles apart. Vitor was born in Porto Alegre, and currently resides in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. Wu Liang was born in Anqing (Anhui province, China) and currently lives in Suzhou (Jiangsu province). The two met in 2020 and have since been engaged in a rich linguistic exchange - while Vitor studies Mandarin, Wu Liang studies Portuguese. Bihua is the fruit of this partnership that involves affection, empathy, and the desire for greater integration between the Chinese and Brazilian peoples. Bihua is free to use and is available in Portuguese, Chinese, and English. The idea is to democratize access for more students to the cultural richness contained in the Chinese language and, thereby, contribute to strengthening cultural relations between China and Portuguese-speaking countries.
