Matthew Haggerty began their work experience in 2011 as a Doctoral Candidate at San Diego State University-California State University. During this time, they also served as an Ecological Metagenomics Laboratory Technician, teaching a laboratory course and sequencing various biological samples. From 2014 to 2016, they worked as a STEM Workshop Laboratory Technician, assisting faculty with DNA quantification, library preparation, sequencing, and annotation. In 2017, Haggerty worked as a Microbiome Consultant at the Alfred E Mann Foundation for Biomedical Engineering, focusing on deriving value from human microbiome research. In 2018, they joined Biota Technology as a Data Scientist, where they performed DNA quality control, ran predictive models, and worked with customers to interpret results. Additionally, Haggerty worked as a Microbiome Consultant for Mount Wilson Ventures, providing expert opinions on DNA fragmentation and library preparation kits.

Matthew Haggerty pursued their education in biology, earning a Bachelor of Science degree from San Diego State University between 2006 and 2011. Throughout their undergraduate studies, they excelled in their field and achieved the distinction of Magna Cum Laude. Subsequently, they undertook an extensive program in ecology, enrolling in the Joint Doctorate Program in Ecology offered by the University of California, Davis and San Diego State University. From 2011 to 2017, Matthew dedicated himself to this doctoral pursuit, ultimately earning a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Ecology.
