The Birmingham Parking Authority was formed in 1972 through an act of the Alabama State legislature, which established the Authority as a separate entity of the City of Birmingham for the purpose of developing and managing the off-street parking facilities for the City.

BPA is a self-sustaining agency managed by parking industry professionals and financed by parking revenues. Funds not used by operations are returned to the City of Birmingham.

As of July 1, 2008, the Birmingham Parking Authority manages:

• 10 garages
• 2 surface lots

The mission of the Birmingham Parking Authority is to provide safe, convenient, and affordable parking facilities to serve the needs of a growing Central Business District.
