Geographic atrophy (GA) condemns five million people worldwide to progressive, irreversible blindness—watching their central vision disappear as reading, driving, and recognizing faces become impossible. Despite two FDA-approved treatments costing $25,000+ annually, patients continue losing vision because current therapies target inflammation after retinal cells have already died. We have identified a fundamentally different approach: preventing retinal cell death at its source by targeting Bax, the master switch that controls when stressed retinal cells live or die. Our breakthrough allows damaged retinal cells time to repair and recover, preserving vision instead of merely slowing its loss.
