Tim Swarens

Tim Swarens is an experienced opinions editor at the Indianapolis Star, a position held since 1997, where Swarens has played a significant role in addressing urban education, child protection, and economic development in Central Indiana. Swarens developed a nationally acclaimed project focused on educational and social challenges in a local high school, leading to the communitywide initiative “Our Children/Our City,” which has mobilized mentorship and funding for local nonprofits. Prior to this role, Swarens served as a copy editor at The Miami Herald from 1990 to 1997 and as the editorial page editor at the Hollywood Sun-Tattler from 1985 to 1990. Swarens holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism from Indiana University Bloomington, earned between 1981 and 1983.
