Barry Ruff

Director Graphics Engineering at Bolt Graphics

Barry Ruff has extensive experience in the graphics engineering and visualization fields. Barry's career began in 1989 as a Freelance Animation Programmer at Viewpoint Animation Studios, where they developed software tools for corporate and broadcast video. In 1990, they moved to The Analytic Sciences Corp. (TASC) as a Graphics/Image Scientist, where they developed synthetic scene generation software on SGI platforms. From 1997 to 2000, they worked at SynaPix, Inc. as Manager/Developer of the Graphics Finishing Group, where they developed a visual effects workstation for scene reconstruction and the combining of synthetic 3D elements with live action footage. From 2000 to 2002, they were Chief Scientist, R&D at BorisFX, Artel Software, creating real-time effects software for editing and compositing. In 2003, they joined Electronic Arts, Worldwide Visualization Group as a Senior Graphics Engineer, developing shaders, lighting, materials, rendering, and compositing for next gen interactive entertainment. In 2006, they became Technical Art Director at Vivendi Universal Games, Radical Entertainment, developing a service oriented architecture for next gen game development process and art workflow. From 2007 to 2012, they worked at mental images, NVIDIA, Inc. as a Senior 3D Services Consultant, developing 3D Web Services for rendering, collaboration, visualization, and content creation. Most recently, they have been Director of Graphics Engineering at Bolt Graphics since 2022, developing hardware and software for the future of rendering.

Barry Ruff received their Bachelor of Science in Computer Science with a Video Minor from Rochester Institute of Technology between 1982 and 1987. Barry then attended Brown University in 1988, but did not receive a degree. In 1993, they obtained their Master of Science in Lighting from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and completed their studies in 1995.
