In 2016, one person’s passion for wild burros started Burro Base Camp. Her corrals became a training ground for untamed burros from the Bureau of Land Management’s Wild Horse and Burro Program. At Burro Base Camp, the wild burros partnered with humans who supported them as they embarked on their transformation from wild to mild.  The goal of the transformation was mastering the skills needed to thrive in a domestic setting.  As each burro learned to trust humans, they worked towards accepting touch, grooming, haltering, leading and loading into a trailer. Achieving these milestones helped them take steps towards their new destiny in a trusted forever home. The reward of being burro brave was exposure to the love and care they deserve.
 
In August 2021, Burro Base Camp’s operations were relocated to a private farm in Kiowa, Colorado.  While the partnership with the Bureau of Land Management and the wild burros continued, a new chapter unfolded. The programming was expanded to support burros - both wild and domestic - who needed a safe place to land. This includes burros in auction yards and sale pens, as well as those in need of rehoming.  Our reach carries beyond the borders of Colorado finding the burros who need our help the most. 

In opening our doors to the burros, our programming  and facilities are constantly changed and modified to best support them. We have built quarantine pens to safely welcome the burros to the farm. We established an intake program to assess veterinary needs, hoof condition, and current skills. Programming was enriched to support the search for a trusted forever home.  

In early 2023, Burro Base Camp attained its 501(c)(3) designation empowering the organization to reach further and to better support the burros in need of a soft place to land.  Burro Base Camp strives to fulfill our mission to find trusted homes for previously wild and domestic burros while acting as a steward to the burros through training and education of the burros.
