Sharon had a light bulb go off at an early age that she love reading and wanted to teach adults to read. Adult literacy is not about smarts, it’s about social justice and educational equity. She became a volunteer tutor at that time and felt at peace in a very new way. Since then her career has been a journey, working with different populations in myriad types of settings.
Sharon's understanding of educational attainment has really grown – non-cognitive factors like resilience and motivation are as integral to learning success as direct instruction. Learning science continues to fascinate her.
She also extended her skills in project management at small and large scale. Using those abilities to support communities and learners’ achievements in education, work, health, and family – advancing the cause – that’s what she want to continue to do today as much as the day of the light bulb.
Joining Byte Back is a dream job for her. Being able to advance digital literacy in today’s world is similar to advancing book reading in days gone by. Sadly, the situation shouldn’t exist and that’s one clear sign that the cause is social inequity. She will continue to advocate, and all of positive efforts will have a ripple effect that will be unstoppable.
