Michael Young

Senior Research Scientist at Cambridge Polymer

Michael Young has over 30 years of experience in the field of analytical chemistry. From 1988 to 1990, they worked as a Senior Chemist for Cambridge Analytical Associates, where they developed rapid turnaround on-site methods and directed on-site laboratory projects. Michael also supervised organics analysis laboratory using EPA SW 846 and related methods, and developed in-house proprietary methods for emerging contaminants. From 1990 to 1994, they worked as a Senior Scientist for META Environmental Inc., where they developed methods for determination of PCBs, PAHs and other organic compounds and metabolites in soils and waters to support environmental engineering staff. Michael also developed microextraction methods for a wide range of organic analytes for both laboratory and on-site analysis. From 1994 to 2003, they worked as a Senior Scientist, and then a Principal Chemist, for Waters Corporation. During this time, they oversaw the validation and verification of new SPE and column chemistries for multi-residue LC-MS and GC-MS applications under ISO 9001 guidelines. Michael also developed novel application methodologies for new SPE products of the Oasis brand and other new sample preparation products, as well as sensitive tandem LC-MS and GC-MS methods for multi-residue pesticide analysis in cannabis and other difficult natural product matrices. Since 2016, they have been working as a Consulting Scientist for Waters Corporation. Since 2020, they have been working as a Senior Research Scientist for Cambridge Polymer Group, providing leadership and expertise for a wide range of chemical analysis projects using high resolution LC-MS, GC-MS and other chromatographic and spectrometric techniques. Michael has also been working as an Independent Chemistry Consultant since 2020.

Michael Young completed their educational journey at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, earning a Ph.D in Analytical Chemistry, a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Chemistry, and a Master's degree in Organic Chemistry.
