Laurence Smith has an extensive work experience spanning multiple industries and roles. They began their career in 2001 as an Engineer at Powel AS (formerly Charles Howard and Associates) during a co-operative education program. In 2002, they worked as a Research Assistant at the University of Twente, followed by a programming role at Bycast Inc. as part of another co-operative education program.

Laurence Smith has a strong educational background in the field of engineering. Laurence obtained their PhD in Systems Engineering, Operations Research, and Numerical Methods from Carleton University in the period from 2006 to 2011. Before that, they completed their MASc in Systems Engineering with a focus on Machine Intelligence at Carleton University from 2004 to 2006.
Prior to their studies at Carleton University, Laurence earned a BASc in Engineering Physics from The University of British Columbia, which they completed from 1999 to 2004.
