J. Fielding Miller

CEO & Co-Founder at CAPTRUST

Fielding is co-founder and chief executive officer of CAPTRUST. He works in the firm’s headquarters in Raleigh, North Carolina.

As the co-founder and chief executive officer of CAPTRUST, Fielding has led the firm from an entrepreneurial start-up into one of the nation’s largest independent financial advisory firms. As chairman and CEO, he sets the course for the company, leads the firm’s corporate strategy, and ensures that CAPTRUST remains competitively positioned to serve clients’ needs in an increasingly complex market environment. Fielding chairs both the Leadership Committee and Operating Committee.

Fielding began his career as a branch manager for Bank of America’s predecessor, North Carolina National Bank (NCNB). Shortly thereafter, he joined the Charlotte-based brokerage Interstate/Johnson Lane, Inc., which was then the largest independent securities firm based in North Carolina at the time.

His continued success helped Fielding create, along with other top Interstate advisors, a different kind of financial services company, one whose clients paid for advisory services via asset-based fees rather than trading commissions. CAPTRUST Financial Advisors opened in 1997, focusing on the needs of high-net-worth investors and their families and corporate retirement plans. For more than 20 years, CAPTRUST has provided institutional and private investors an independent and objective choice for financial advice and fiduciary support.

One aspect of CAPTRUST’s mission is to enrich the lives of children in the communities the firm serves. To help achieve this goal, Fielding enabled creation of the CAPTRUST Community Foundation in 2007. This employee-run 501(c)(3) nonprofit foundation aims to contribute time and resources to local and national charities serving the needs of children.

Another of Fielding’s favored philanthropies is Hope Reins, a 33-acre ranch about 30 miles north of Raleigh that matches rescued horses with children suffering from chronic illness or emotional crisis. He is also very involved with his alma mater, East Carolina University, and its School of Entrepreneurship, within East Carolina University’s College of Business.
