Joe Sexton is an experienced microbiologist currently serving as a Laboratory Team Lead in both the Clinical and Environmental Microbiology Branch and the Mycotic Diseases Branch at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention since October 2017. Additionally, Joe has contributed as the Acting Laboratory Team Lead and as a COVID-19 Response Lab Task Force Study Coordinator. Joe's role in the field of applied community ecology is demonstrated through involvement with ACEcology since November 2019. A board member at Clyde Shepherd Nature Preserve from November 2019 to March 2023, Joe holds a Ph.D. in Microbiology from Oregon State University, where research focused on microbial physiology and bacterial cooperation. Prior academic experiences include undergraduate research at Georgia State University and the University of Connecticut, as well as tropical ecology research in Ecuador. Joe is also a founding member of Georgia State University's iGEM team, emphasizing contributions to synthetic biology.
