Lyle Petersen possesses extensive experience in public health, particularly in vector-borne diseases and epidemiology. Currently serving as the Director of the Division of Vector-Borne Diseases at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention since January 2001, Lyle Petersen also held the position of Deputy Director for Science. Prior to this, Lyle Petersen directed Intervention Epidemiology at the Robert Koch Institute from January 1996 to January 2001 and was the Chief of the HIV Seroepidemiology Branch and Population Studies Section at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention from January 1988 to December 1995. Lyle Petersen's educational background includes a Doctor of Medicine from the University of California, San Francisco, a Master of Public Health from Emory University, and a Bachelor of Science in Biology from UC San Diego, alongside an internship and residency in medicine at Stanford University.
