Gordon Syme has a diverse work experience in the software industry. Gordon began their career in 2004 as a co-founder and software engineer at Edgespace, a software development company where they worked on long-running software development projects and attempted to build their own products. Gordon also had short-term contracts at companies like Securify, where they enhanced testing capabilities for their product, and Passmark Security (acquired by RSA), where they worked as a software contractor, providing multi-factor authentication and fraud detection services.
In 2008, Gordon joined TERMINALFOUR as a software engineer, responsible for developing and testing their content management system. Gordon also built tooling to assist in testing, maintenance, and backporting of the product.
In 2009, Gordon worked as a software engineer at Waratek, a startup focused on building technology for clustering Java Virtual Machines. Gordon joined as the 4th hire and contributed to their novel idea involving streaming memory updates between JVMs.
From 2010 to 2013, Gordon worked as a Software Development Engineer at Amazon.com, specifically in their Network Automation team in Dublin. Gordon played a crucial role in provisioning new networking hardware, monitoring and managing Amazon's hardware load-balancers and networking infrastructure.
Most recently, Gordon has been working at CircleCI since 2013 as a Senior Staff Software Engineer. Gordon has worked across their entire product, focusing on designing, building, and optimizing backend systems. Gordon's broad knowledge of CircleCI's systems and product allows him to move between teams, helping them with design and implementation of solutions for complex problems.
Gordon Syme earned a BA (Mod) degree in Computer Science from Trinity College Dublin, graduating with first-class honors. Gordon attended the school from 2000 to 2004.
