Matthew McCann is the Region 1 Director for the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) within the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Region 1 is headquartered in Boston and serves the six New England states of Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont. CISA works with partners to defend against today’s digital and physical threats and collaborate to build more secure and resilient infrastructure for the future.
Through the leadership of field-based resources and capabilities, Regional Directors guide CISA’s numerous programs. Mr. McCann has served as the Regional Director since 2016. He is the senior CISA official and is accountable for the execution of programs to defend critical infrastructure against the threats of today, while coordinating and collaborating with partners across the government and the private sector, to secure against evolving threats of tomorrow. Mr. McCann is also responsible for directing incident management activities as they relate to critical infrastructure restoration and resilience.
Before his CISA tenure, Mr. McCann was the Deputy Director of, the Preparedness Division for the Federal Emergency Management Agency in Region 1. Prior to this role, he was an Assistant Director at the Department of State’s flagship National Passport Center. Mr. McCann served 27 years in the U.S. Coast Guard, retiring as a Captain (O6). During his military service, Mr. McCann responded to many major contingencies including the 9/11 Attacks, Hurricane Katrina, and Deepwater Horizon. Early in his career, Mr. McCann worked in operations management in the chemical and airfreight industries.
Mr. McCann earned a BA from Norwich University and an MPA from the University of New Hampshire. He is an alumnus of Harvard University’s NPLI Executive Education Program, and the GS Graduate School’s Executive Potential Program, and completed Joint Professional Military Education studies at four war colleges. Mr. McCann is accredited as an IAEM Certified Emergency Manager, NIMS Type 1 Incident Commander, and ASIS Certified Protection Professional.
