Derek Pisner has a diverse range of work experience in the field of machine learning and data science. Derek started their career as a Project Manager and Research Software Engineer at the University of Arizona in 2014, where they built and administered an 18-node beowulf cluster and coordinated DARPA-funded studies on sleep entrainment therapies. In 2016, they joined The University of Texas at Austin as a Graduate Student Data Scientist, where they trained brain network Variational Graph Autoencoders and developed webcrawlers and geolocation data-mining workflows. Derek also worked on stratifying treatment outcomes using classifiers. In 2019, Derek became a ML Research Scientist and Visiting Fellow at The Johns Hopkins University, where they invented and implemented nerve tract image modeling techniques for brain network analysis and collaborated on deploying a high-throughput connectome sampler. Currently, Derek is a Machine Learning Engineer at Clairity, Inc. starting in 2022.

Derek Pisner completed their education at The University of Texas at Austin, where they obtained their Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Cognitive Neuroscience and Applied Statistical Modeling. This academic journey lasted from 2016 to 2021. Prior to that, Derek pursued their undergraduate studies at the University of Virginia from 2007 to 2011.
