Michael Greenstone has a diverse and extensive work experience in academia and public policy. Michael is currently serving as the Milton Friedman Distinguished Service Professor in Economics at the University of Chicago since January 2019. Prior to this role, they held the position of Milton Friedman Professor in Economics at the same institution from July 2014 to January 2019.
In addition to their work at the University of Chicago, Greenstone is the Chairman and Co-founder of Climate Vault since July 2018. Michael also served as the Director of the Becker Friedman Institute for Economics at the University of Chicago starting from July 2017.
Greenstone has been actively involved in various research and policy organizations. Michael was the Pritzker Director of the University of Chicago Urban Labs, Energy and Environment Lab since 2015. Michael also co-directed the Climate Impact Lab from 2014. Moreover, they served as the Director of the Energy Policy Institute at the University of Chicago (EPIC) starting from July 2014.
Before joining the University of Chicago, Greenstone held positions at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) from 2003 to 2014. Michael was the 3M Professor of Environmental Economics (with tenure) from July 2006 to July 2014. Prior to this, they served as the 3M Associate Professor of Economics (with tenure) from July 2003 to July 2006.
Greenstone has also had a foray into public policy. Michael served as the Chief Economist at the Council of Economic Advisers in The White House from January 2009 to January 2010.
Michael'sacademic career began at the University of Chicago in July 2000, where they started as an Assistant Professor of Economics until July 2003.
Michael Greenstone received their Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from Swarthmore College in 1991. Michael then went on to pursue a Ph.D. in Economics at Princeton University, completing their studies in 1998.
