Joe Kemp

Director of Backend Engineering at Close

Joe Kemp has a long history of experience in the IT field. Joe began their career in 1991 as a Senior System Administrator for the University of Maryland's Office of Academic Computing Services (OACS). During their time there, they administered a 1,500 node NetWare network, programmed in C, PowerBuilder and Visual Basic, installed Gupta SQL Server and IBM DB/2 servers, and prototyped projects using Linux 1. In 1996, they began working as a Network/Systems Engineer for SIGNAL, where they researched strategies for implementing Windows NT and NetWare network operating systems. Joe also implemented a mission critical collaboration system built upon NetFRAME high availability server. Later that same year, they took on the role of NOC Program Manager for the Washington/Baltimore HIDTA. In 2004, they joined CapWIN as a Senior Architect, where they managed software development and infrastructure teams, led backend software developers, and designed the next generation CapWIN client. In 2012, they moved to Arbitron as a Senior Systems Engineer - Edge Services. After that, they joined RC_ARINC in 2013 as an Infrastructure Engineering Manager, where they led a team that supported the ARINCDirect infrastructure and provided support for Python applications. Finally, in 2016 they began working at Close as a Director of Backend Engineering, Sr. Backend Engineering Manager, and DevOps Engineer.

Joe Kemp received a BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Maryland in 1994. Joe then went on to obtain a MS in Computer Information Management from the University of Maryland Global Campus in 2002. In 2009, they earned a Certified Forensics Analyst (GCFA) from GIAC. In 2013, they obtained a Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE) from Red Hat. Joe is also an AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Associate from Amazon Web Services.
