Caroline Tagg is a Senior Lecturer in Applied Linguistics and English Language at the Open University, where they research the language resources and strategies used in new media for constructing online self-images and community connections. For their PhD at the University of Birmingham, Caroline investigated a corpus of over 11,000 text messages, challenging conventional views on brevity and creativity in digital communication. They have also focused on the use of English on Facebook, examining how language choice serves as a tool for community-building and privacy negotiation in semi-public spaces. Additionally, Caroline is a Co-Investigator on the AHRC project 'Translanguaging and Translation,' which explores linguistic diversity in superdiverse urban settings. Previously, they held lecturer positions at the University of Birmingham and the Open University.
