Michelle O'Brien has a strong background in audit and compliance. Michelle started their career in 1999 as an auditor at Pricewaterhouse Coopers and later joined Price Waterhouse Management Consultants in the Assurance and Business Advisory Services Department. At Price Waterhouse, they progressed from an audit junior to assistant manager, taking on responsibilities such as audit planning, coordination, and review, internal controls reviews, supervision of audit staff, and client liaison. In 2003, Michelle joined Coillte Teoranta as Group Internal Audit Manager and later assumed the role of Assurance and Compliance Director in 2016.

Michelle O'Brien started their education in 1994 at Trinity College Dublin, where they pursued a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) degree in Business and Politics. Michelle completed this program in 1998. In 1998, they enrolled at Dublin City University and obtained a Professional Diploma in Accountancy by 1999. After a break in their education, Michelle returned to Dublin City University in 2012 and completed a Master of Business Administration (MBA) with First Class Honors in 2014. During their MBA, they focused on various subjects including Organizational Behaviour and Change, Strategy, Innovation, Strategy, Leadership, and Transformation.
