Dan Smith has worked in the field of data research management since 1999. From 1999 to 2002, they were a Partner at Algenta, where they worked with government groups and universities on data modeling and distributed systems projects. In 2002, they joined the IBM Advanced Technology Group as a Semantic Web Research. From 2001 to 2009, Dan Smith was an Academic Staff at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where they created data access and documentation tools based on the Ecological Metadata Language (EML) standard, and created tools for automatic phylogenetic assignments of culture-independent DNA fingerprints. In 2009, Dan Smith Co-Founded and became a Partner at Colectica, where they created software and associated services to document statistical data and survey research using Open Data standards. Dan also created machine actionable metadata to document data and allow automation in the data's lifecycle. Colectica is currently used by university research groups and national statistical offices.
Dan Smith attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison from 1999 to 2002, where they earned a BS in Computer Science and History. Dan then attended the University of Minnesota from 2004 to 2006, where they earned a Masters in Computer Science and Biostatistics.
