College Steps
Sumera Shaikh, MA, currently serves as an Instructional Coordinator at College Steps, facilitating educational initiatives at Northern Virginia Community College's Annandale and Alexandria campuses since July 2021. Previously, Sumera held the position of Graduate Assistant at George Mason University from January to June 2023, focusing on research related to policies affecting marginalized college student populations, including first-generation, low-income, DACA, TPS, and refugee students. Prior experience includes the role of Director of Childcare Services at Fairfax County Park Authority from April 2018 to July 2021. Sumera Shaikh is pursuing a Master of Business Administration at Virginia Commonwealth University, having obtained a Master of Arts in Higher Education and Student Development, a Bachelor of Science in Integrative Studies, and an Associate of Science in Teacher Education from educational institutions including George Mason University and Northern Virginia Community College.

College Steps
College Steps partners with colleges, high schools, and parents to advance the social, academic, independent living, and career aspirations of students living with a social, communication and/or learning challenge. The primary goal of College Steps is to prepare students for meaningful careers and increased autonomy after graduation. Therefore, College Steps places a strong emphasis on self-advocacy, employment training, and independent living skill development. Each of our programs is coordinated by a full-time, on-campus, Program Coordinator. This Master’s Level special educator supervises and trains a network of Peer Mentors, who are highly trained and paid graduate and undergraduates interested in supporting the needs of College Steps scholars.
