Tom Gilbert is Professor of Palaeogenomics at the University of Copenhagen (Denmark), Professor II at NTNU University Museum (Norway), and Director of the Danish National Research Foundation Center for Evolutionary Hologenomics. His research interests span the development and implementation of new techniques in palaeogenomics, to combining host genome alongside their associated microbiome data when addressing questions of both basic and applied scientific relevance. In the context of the collapse and extinction of species his team are generating and analysed temporal genomic datasets of a range of mammal and bird species, in order to address questions such as how to species specific traits condition the genomic consequences to population collapse, and what are the technical limits to ancient genome reconstruction. His recent research has been funded by among others, the European Research Council, the EU H2020 actions, the Carlsberg Foundation and the Danish National Research Foundation.
