Columbia Community Care (CCC) was founded in March of 2020 initially as a hunger relief organization to address the exacerbated hardships and inequities related to food access in Howard County due to the pandemic. United Way of Central Maryland recently reported that about 23% of the
116,903 Howard County households (or 26,887 households) fall under the ALICE (Asset Limited Income Constrained, Employed) indicator, and of that third, the vast majority are Black and Hispanic families. These are families who are just above the national poverty average and therefore do not quality for social services. This data matches what we have seen at Columbia Community Care. The demographic that we serve is majority those who identify as Black, Brown, people of color, and/or immigrant, are facing financial hardship and do not qualify for social services. We also serve many individuals who do fall below the poverty line and are facing hardships living in a county where cost
of living is so high. We have seen a consistent cliental since our founding who continue to face challenges and obstacles around access to services, financial hardship, hunger, and systemic injustice and inequities. CCC currently operates three in person food distribution sites on Saturdays and operates our free grocery delivery service at the Columbia Flier Building three days a week. CCC has served hundreds of thousands of residents of Howard County and has delivered over 16,000 full grocery orders. We have always been intentional about removing barriers to access and creating a model of mutual aid. We also know the importance of addressing the root causes of poverty, hunger,
inequities, and injustice is essential in ensuring that we all don’t just survive, but thrive. As a non-profit, Columbia Community Care has expanded to respond to the holistic needs of Howard County families through partnering with organizations, community members, and businesses to provide programming and services under our four Pillars.
