Owen Freestone

Owen Freestone is an experienced public sector economist with a strong background in providing policy-relevant advice supported by significant academic and applied economic expertise. At the Commonwealth Treasury, Owen held multiple leadership roles, including Assistant Secretary of the Competition Taskforce and Director of Fiscal Policy, where they led critical reforms and fiscal strategies. Currently, Owen serves as the Chief Economist in the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, following an interim role as Economic Adviser. Owen also completed a PhD at The Australian National University, focusing on income inequality over the lifecycle.
