Andy Flaherty has a diverse work experience spanning over several industries. Andy started their career as the Art Committee Chair for Wisconsin Union Directorate at The University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1982. Andy then went on to work as an Assistant Account Executive at William A. Robinson, Inc. in 1984 and as an Account Executive at CPM Promotional Marketing from 1986 to 1988. Andy further advanced their career as an Account Supervisor Marketing at McAdams Associates from 1988 to 1991 and as a Membership Coordinator at the National Food Brokers Association from 1991 to 1993. Andy then worked as an Account Executive at The Howard Bomstein Agency from 1994 to 1995 and as a Project Coordinator for the Returning Peace Corp Fellows Program at The George Washington University from 1995 to 1996. In 1997, they joined Chicago Public Schools as a Senior Instructional Specialist/Literacy Coach Writing/English Teacher/IB Consultant & Trainer, where they worked until 2011. Finally, in 2012, they became the Director of English Education at Concept Schools.

Andy Flaherty earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. They then went on to pursue a Master's degree in Secondary Education and Teaching at The George Washington University. Finally, they obtained a Master of Arts degree in Reading Education - Literacy Specialist K-12 from Concordia University Chicago.
