Peter Gates has a long and varied career in the field of database technology. Peter began their career in 1995 as a Consultant for Rhone-Poulenc Rorer, where they administered IT projects in support of legal, business development, and competitive intelligence. In 1996, they worked as a Consultant for SmithKline Beecham, where they gathered requirements, designed, and implemented applications supporting drug discovery. In 1997, they worked as a Consultant for Affymetrix, where they created a comprehensive object model for research computing and implemented DNA chip functional testing databases using MS Access. From 1998 to 2000, they worked at SciQuest (Emax Solutions) as a Technical Manager, managing two projects grossing 600K and 800K with development staffs of 5 and 7. In 2000, they worked at 3 Dimensional Pharmaceuticals as Director of Database Technology, where they built and managed a database department with a fulltime staff of 3 developers and a DBA. From 2003 to 2007, they worked at J&J PRD LLC as Director of Data Management and Business Intelligence and Director of Database Technology, where they were responsible for data architecture and managed a team of 14 people across 6 different sites. From 2007 to 2012, they worked at Janssen, Pharmaceutical Companies of Johnson and Johnson as Director Integration and Standards Pharmaceutical Research, where they were responsible for data architecture in support of translational research, continued support of medical safety and its integration with clinical research, and architectural support for the construction of a global clinical data repository. From 2016 to 2019, they worked at Conexus as Corporate Advisor and Head of Consulting Services, where they delivered value in all phases of database projects from conceptual development to application retirement for customers and used techniques and methods in Applied Category Theory (ACT) to continue work as a key innovator in the use of ACT for complex databases.
Peter Gates has a long history of education. Peter began their studies in 1977 at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, where they earned a BS in Engineering Biophysics in 1981. Peter then went on to the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where they earned an MS in Biophysics and Physiology in 1985. Following this, they attended Rush University, where they earned a Ph.D. in Physiology and Biophysics in 1989. Finally, they completed a Post Doc at Mayo Graduate School in 1991.
