Michael Atkinson

Michael Atkinson is a Professorial Lecturer in Law specializing in Artificial Intelligence Law & Policy at The George Washington University Law School since August 2022. Currently a Partner at Crowell & Moring LLP, Atkinson co-leads the National Security Practice Group and is a member of the White Collar and Regulatory Enforcement and Investigations Group. Previously, Atkinson served as the Inspector General of the Intelligence Community, overseeing the fourteen departments and agencies within the U.S. Intelligence Community from May 2018 to May 2020. Prior to this role, Atkinson held multiple positions at the U.S. Department of Justice from September 2002 to April 2018, including Senior Counsel and Acting Deputy Assistant Attorney General, focusing on national security and fraud-related matters. Atkinson began a legal career at Winston & Strawn LLP as a Partner, with a practice concentrated on white-collar defense and complex civil litigation. Academic credentials include a Doctor of Law from Cornell Law School and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Syracuse University.
