Mark Fonseca earned a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Resource Development from the University of Rhode Island in 1976. From 1976 to 1983, they pursued a Master's Degree (MSc) in Environmental Science at the University of Virginia. Later, they attended the University of California, Berkeley from 1993 to 1998, where they obtained a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Integrative Biology.
