Founded in 1969 by Sam Shearer, CSE had its beginnings in servicing and repairing safety equipment for the coal mining industry. Sam, having an entrepreneurial spirit, decided that CSE should instead develop its own superior safety equipment. 

CSE has grown from its repair roots to designing and manufacturing rugged safety products for industrial environments. CSE’s core products focus on gas detection—both handheld and fixed systems—and emergency escape breathing devices. CSE has developed some of the world’s first types of products, such as the first carried 1-hour duration escape breathing device and most recently the first SMART Self-Contained Self-Rescuer (also referred to as an EEBD) that performs a self-inspection and alerts users and operators if it requires attention. CSE products are designed to outlast where others fall short, are easier to maintain, and are backed by world-class service.

CSE services industries such as: mining, tunneling, fire service, utilities, and more, in locations throughout the world. CSE designs and manufactures its products at its facility located east of Pittsburgh in Export, PA.
