Senior Research Scientist

Alison Small is a Principal Research Scientist at the CSIRO McMaster Laboratory in Armidale, NSW, where they lead livestock welfare research focusing on neonatal development, pain mitigation, and humane slaughter. Alison previously worked as a Research Scientist and Meat Industry Adviser at the CSIRO Meat Research Institute, supporting the Australian red meat industry. They hold a PhD from the University of Bristol and a veterinary degree from the University of Edinburgh, and they served as a founding member of the European College of Veterinary Public Health. Prior to their research career, Alison worked in mixed veterinary practice and as an Official Veterinary Surgeon in multiple abattoirs.
