Matthew Long is the Chief Executive Officer and co-founder of [C]Worthy, a non-profit research organization focused on building the tools needed to ensure safe, effective ocean-based carbon dioxide removal (CDR) and robust monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) of ocean-based CDR technologies. They served as a Scientist in the Climate & Global Dynamics Laboratory at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) from 2014 to 2024, contributing to development and applications of the Community Earth System Model. Long previously built and deployed instruments to measure ocean carbon variables and worked as a Civil Engineer at CDM Smith, developing hydrologic, hydraulic, and water quality models for sewer networks and urban rivers. They were a US Peace Corps volunteer and taught high school Physics and Geography in Tanzania. Education includes a PhD in Oceanography from Stanford University (2010), an MS in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Tufts University (2000), and a BS in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Tufts University (1998).
