Fred Zhang

Fred Zhang is a seasoned engineering leader currently serving as a Senior Engineering Manager at Databricks since October 2025. Previously, Fred held the role of Director of Engineering at Astronomer from September 2021 to October 2025, and also served as a Senior Engineering Manager and Principal Software Engineer during his tenure there. Earlier experience includes positions at Splunk as a Principal and Senior Data Scientist/ML Engineer from June 2015 to September 2021, and as a Statistical Consultant at The Short Term Consulting Service (STCS) of the University of British Columbia from May 2011 to September 2016, where Fred provided statistical guidance and conducted research. Additional roles include Data Scientist at Metafor Software, where Fred designed real-time automated models, and research and teaching positions at the University of British Columbia, contributing to projects on anomaly detection in health data. Fred Zhang earned a Ph.D. in Statistics from the University of British Columbia in 2017, complemented by a Master’s degree in Statistics and a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics and Statistics from Zhejiang University.
